Faith, The Expression of A Christian Life Romans Pt 1

Living in Faith
The Expression of a Christian LifeThe Book of Romans Part 1

It is my hope that by the end of this challenge I have set out to do, and I welcome anyone and everyone to join me, that I will be a truly changed person, and my prayer is the same for you. I have always heard that the book of Romans is truly a starting point to living a True Christian Life. I will be honest here; I have only read bits and pieces of it, until now. It truly is a wonderful book, and I do suggest to those who are new to the faith, read the book of Romans first!

To give you a basic background on the book of Romans: it was written by Paul, after he had written 1st & 2nd Thessalonians, 1st & 2nd Corinthians and possible Philippians (Information from ‘Eerdmans’ Handbook to the Bible’. Really great book to have, it breaks the Bible down very clearly). According to ‘The Quest Study Bible, NIV’ it was written around 57 AC. As we know Paul’s (whose name was Saul before) conversion took place after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, after Paul had killed many followers of Christ and after he had seen that Christ had indeed risen from the dead for himself, you can read more about his conversion in Acts 9. He knew who Jesus was, for they were both alive at the same time; however, Saul (before name change) did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah that the Jewish nation was waiting for. After his conversion and name change, Paul became one of Jesus’ well know Apostles of the gospel.

Chapter 1: Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome God’s Wrath Against Mankind.

The first 15 verses are in regards to his longing and intentions on going to Rome’ however, God had other plans for him before he was able to go; now the way seems clear for him to go. He is happy with the Christ followers of Rome, because their strong faith in Jesus is being reported around the known world. Now that he is ability to go, his main agenda in going was so that they could give each other strength and to have a harvest among them.
First Set of Focus Verses: Romans 1:16-17
16. I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation of everyone who believes: first to the Jews, then to the Gentiles. 17. For in the Gospel a Righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last (or ‘faith by faith ESV), just as it is written; ‘The righteous will live by faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4, second half) NIV

The reason why I chose this as the first set of focus verses is twofold.
The first being because it seems to be the one item lacking in most Christian in our day and age, and that is FAITH. Now this is my option and you may not agree, but from some Christians, whom I know, they believe in God and Jesus, they call themselves Christian, yet they lack true faith. They question how God can let the world get as crazy as it has, and I’ll admit it, there was a time I did too. But it has come through study and truly having faith in my heart in what the Bible says and from what I see God showing me, God knows what he is doing and Jesus will come and save the day long before it’s too late. This had been foretold long before the birth of Jesus Christ, in the book of Daniel. If you have read the book of Revelation’s then you know what is coming.

Just a side note here and what I’m about to say some of you may not like, those of you who believe that there will be a rapture before the Great Tribulation, please read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, do your study on it and you will see that the ‘Left Behind’ theory is a false teaching. (You can read more about why I say this on my ‘The Rapture’ Page. I know that there are those who believe in the Rapture and there are those that don’t. I am asking you to have an open heart and mind to what God is telling you. There are verses to back this up and plenty of sites that you can visit that can help you in your studies on this subject. In the end, it’s up to you to what you believe, this is my view) I am more than welcome to hear your view on this, I do ask one thing though, please keep it civil otherwise it will not be posted. I know we are human and we are strong in our beliefs; however, I will not allow anyone to be bullied, yelled at, and called names and so forth here. This is a safe haven to share our beliefs in God and to share our thoughts and Art work.

We learn righteousness through our faith in God, and we are given salvation and grace because of that faith. This is a free gift from God, it’s not something we have to earn, all we have to do is ask and it shall be given. We have such an awesome God who loves us so much, enough that he sent his son to die in our place for our sins. It tears at my heart that God sent his son here to Earth as a human, was beaten and then hung on a cross and carried all of our sins, and I do mean all; past, present and future sins. How could I not have love and faith in someone who would do that for me, for us? A sinner who is not worthy of his forgiveness, yet he does love us and will forgive all of our sins. I am sure you feel the same.

The second, I have always wondered what it meant where it states “by the first to the last” NIV or “faith to faith” ESV and YLT. So after a little research, this is what is comes down to: We have faith in Christ first and last we are justified by faith. So we need faith to be justified by faith. I love when God has a way of speaking to us through his scripture, and all I did was ask for a bit of clarification and here is where I found it, Galatians 2:16 Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the laws no one will be justified. Now we will be going into more detail on whether or not we are to follow the Ten Commandments or not within the next couple of chapters, and you will be surprised at what you will learn.

The second focus verses: Romans 1:19-20
19. since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so the men are without excuse. NIV

These two verses are so powerful in letting us know just how powerful our God really is; how can someone look at this world and think that it did not have a hand behind its creation. This planet we live on, the plants, animals, the air, rocks and us human beings, I could go on and on. It’s all too complex to have happened all on its own. This is why it is stated, ‘the men are without excuse.’ We who believe can see the wonders of what God has created for us and how beautiful it all is.

Chapter 2:  God’s Righteous Judgment

Chapter two goes in to God’s Righteous Judgment; however, you may be asking yourself, ‘How can a loving God condemn those he says he loves, for he loves us all. Well from the beginning, he created us with free will; he wanted us to love him back because we wanted to, not because he made us that way. Because of free will, we also have the free will to have faith and believe in and upon him. It is not God who is sending us to Hell; it is us making that choice.

 Third focus verses: Romans 2:1-4 & 6
You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another,  you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same thing. (a)  2. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3. So when you, a mere human being pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4. Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? … 6. God “will give each person according to what he has done.” (b) NIV
(a)We can see in Matt. 7:1, Jesus states, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”
We also need to be careful of our words, in Matt. 12:36 Jesus speaks about being judged by what we say. Word can and do have action behind them.

(b) See Psalms 62:12& Proverbs 24:12

We need to remember that we ourselves are sinners and have no right to judge anyone else. I don’t know about all of you, but I do catch myself every now and then judging someone else’s actions. Just because I believe with my heart that I am one of God’s children doesn’t mean I am perfect; he is still working on me and for that I couldn’t be happier, we are all a work in progress. I love verse four most of all in this passage, it’s a reminder that God’s love us and wants us to repent, he wants us in his arms and to be a part of his family.

Last focus verses: Romans 2:28-29

28. For a person is not a Jew who is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise in not from other people, but from God. NIV

God knows what is in our hearts, you can act like you are Christian to people you see every day: however, God knows what’s in your heart. We must have true faith in our hearts for God, not ourselves; we must ask for his forgiveness and ask Jesus into our hearts, so that he may stand in for us on Judgment Day, I pray you are ready. Plus remember, once you have asked God to forgive you of your sins, and you truly have confessed the Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior you have Eternal Life, forever; this means it will never go away, you will never lose your salvation.
